Date: 13th May 2006
Venue: Merthyr
Final Score: 32 - 25
Write Up: Blackwood ended the season on a lower note than expected with a 32-25 loss at the hands of Merthyr. Blackwood have won all their home games in 2006 and including this one, only lost two away games. This means that Blackwood have gone undefeated for 18 of their last 20 matches which is an outstanding result considering the slow start to the season.

The first half was quiet and Blackwood looked very dangerous in the loose and their back division threatened on the counter attack. After only 4 minutes the away side crossed the line but the referee was not on the spot and disallowed the try. This was to knock the confidence of Blackwood and from then on Merthyr dominated possession and territory but failed to capitalise on their chances.

It was on thirty minutes that Blackwood went over again for a try. A defensive error allowed Blackwoods Craig Clements to gather the ball and set up a ruck. Quick ball was passed to David James and in turn to Luke Knight who raced over for a score in the corner. The try was unconverted to give the away side a 0-5 lead.

Only moments later they increased their lead when good lineout ball was secured by Marc Gwilt. Ex Merthyr hooker Huw Jones came around the lineout to receive the ball on the burst and a clever slip pass to David James opened the gap in the defence allowing him to touch down under the posts. Jeremy Lloyd converted and the Ironmen were 0-12 down.

Blackwood were awarded a penalty from the restart for a late and dangerous shoulder charge on hooker Huw Jones. Lloyd slotted the penalty from halfway putting Merthyr 0-15 down and in serious trouble.

On the stroke of half time scrum half Ryan Harries gained the Ironmen five vital points with a tap penalty and made the half time score 5-15.

Merthyr, in the second half played more through their pack they began to turn the tide in their favour. A catch and drive from a lineout sent Ross Coombes over and Neil Burnett converted to close the score to 12-15.

Fifteen minutes later, Merthyr used the same move and produced the result but Rhys Miles was the scorer on this occasion. Neil Burnett converted the score and Merthyr led for the first time at 19-15.

This was short lived, when a ruck was set up 10 metres in front of the Merthyr posts. The ball was slung out wide and Kristan Perry made the break and passed to David James who burst through for his second try. Jeremy Lloyd converted and Blackwood took the lead again 19-22.

Merthyr levelled the scores again when Blackwood came offside in a ruck situation. Neil Burnett slotted the kick and another three points for his side. Jeremy Lloyd returned the compliment for Blackwood minutes later with a well struck penalty. This gave his side their final score of the afternoon with 25 points.

The last say however, went to Merthyr, when the referee gave them a penalty try after some dominant scrum pressure. Neil Burnett converted and then slotted a penalty to give the final score. Merthyr 32 - Blackwood 25.
