THIS WAS IT !! Crunch time for who would be relegated from Division One....there could be only one survivor out of the three teams. Blackwood, Abercynon or Ystrad Rhondda.
The match kicked off and both teams were attempting to play at pace. Final handling errors and pressure from opposition were preventing either side getting the first score. Eventually after fifteen minutes, the deadlock was broken and Ystrad landed a drop goal taking them 0-3 into the lead. It took no less than three minutes later for Blackwood to respond. A solid Blackwood scrum on the Ystrad 22 gave Scrum Half Matt Lewis plenty of time to pass the ball out to Emanuelli who took the ball from a standing start and danced his way through the napping defence and under the posts. He converted his own try and Blackwood led 7-3. Five minutes later it was Emanuelli again who kept the scoreboard ticking over, with a Drop Goal attempt from in front of the posts. There was no doubt with the effort and Blackwood were 10-3 up to the delight of the home support. Ystrad responded with a penalty to close the score to 10-6 but Blackwood were attacking from all positions and the visitors looked scrappy. The resart saw Blackwood with a lineout on the Ystrad 10 metre line. The ball was secured and went out to Emanuelli for a clever chip kick behind the defence. The bounce favoured Blackwood's Owain Williams on the chase who went over for the try. Emanuelli converted for a half time score of 17-6. The second half kicked off and Blackwood found themselves with a five metre attacking lineout thanks to some good pressure from Gregg Davies. The lineout was secured and Hooker Lee White drove over for the score with the aid of his fellow pack members. Emanuelli again had no problem with the conversion and turned before the kick had reached the uprights. Blackwood now had a cushion of 24-6 and it woke Ystrad up. They crossed with a well worked try through the forwards and the conversion added reducing their deficit to 24-11. Things however, were not going their way for long when the prop was given the red card for stamping. Taking advantage of the extra man, Blackwood crossed the line through Brendan Lampitt but the try disallowed as the ball spilled according to the referee. This proved to be of no consequence as Blackwood took advantage of an Ystrad knock on. Left Wing Owain Williams stepped on the gas from half way to score just left of the uprights. Emanuelli slotted the conversion and Blackwood were in control at 31-11. With very little time left and the excitement buzzing through the stand in the knowledge that Blackwood were in for a win, Ystrad managed another penalty and a try but it was too little too late. The final whistle blew to the delight of the Blackwood support and a score of 31-20 secured their position in Divsion One. It was Ystrad and Abercynon for the relegation drop to Division Two. The match was played in good spirits and with so much riding on a single game, both sides kept their heads and represented their clubs proudly. |
