Blackwood 22 - Carmarthen Quins 23
A dramatic injury-time try and conversion from Carmarthen Quins snatched victory from the grasp of unlucky Blackwood, who had dominated a thrilling third-round SWALEC Cup tie at Glan yr Afon Park. It was cruel fate for Blackwood, who deserved better, but as Scotland found out to their cost a week ago, sport isn’t always fair. The premiership visitors had a slight edge in the scrums but Blackwood totally dominated the lineouts through locks Marc Gwilt and Gareth Short and in the loose, the efforts of no 8 Dai Brake and hooker Stuart Vokes helped them get on top at the breakdowns. Behind their hard-working pack, skipper Gavin Rees was immense, abrasive and elusive, and caused the Quins’ defence all kinds of problems. An early penalty by Richard Powell was cancelled out by one from James Garland for the Quins, who then took the lead when Jason Harries made a clean break to put Ryan Llewellyn over and Garland converted. Another Garland penalty after 27 minutes from virtually the same spot as his earlier one stretched the visitors’ lead to 10 points, and it was deserved because Blackwood’s discipline let them down and led to a string of penalties. A high tackle by Sililo Martens on Rees allowed Powell to kick his second penalty, and a minute later Harries tried a little chip over the Blackwood defence but it was charged down by Joe Bajada, who snapped up the ball and sprinted 45 metres for a try under the posts. Powell converted to make it 13-13 at the interval and it was very much game on. Blackwood tightened up their discipline after the break and their forwards took control and kept the premiership side on the back foot. The pressure told and Powell kicked two more penalties, and when he added his fifth of the tie in the 74th minute after it was reversed because a Quins player talked back to the referee, it looked all over for the visitors. Desperately they ran the ball and substitute Gareth Cull kicked a penalty from 35 metres in the 77th minute to put them into range. A powerful surge by Richard Wilkes got the Quins into the home 22 for the first time in the half and the ball was whipped back to Cull, who placed a pinpoint diagonal kick right into the outstretched arms of Harries in a training-ground move. Harries touched down on 82 minutes and there had been few injuries, so it was obvious the conversion would decide the outcome. The kick was from the touchline in very heavy conditions but Cull placed it straight and true to break Blackwood hearts and give the Quins a lucky passage into the last eight. Blackwood chairman Keith Stock said afterwards: -I am absolutely gutted. At 13-3 down I thought the game was going away from us, but when we levelled I felt we were in with a chance. We had the better of the second half and when we were nine points clear, it looked like we could hold on and win.
