TREORCHY 18 BLACKWOOD 29
The Wood made an orgasmic start to the season with this entertaining win at The Oval. An away win is always excellent but a bonus point was all you could ask for against a very committed home side. The first twenty minutes was very hard work and Treorchy must have been disappointed to be only a drop goal ahead. The turning point came when they were again camped in the Wood 25. They gave a penalty away and Mark Birkby launched a length of the field move which ended in an Anthony John try. New recruit Danny Ellis converted. The home side struck again when a missed tackle made Blackwoods defence superflous to the job of stopping a sweeping back move. Treorchy converted before a mass punchup seemed to galvanize Woods pack. One home fan got a bit upset when he thought one of the ballboys was stuck in the middle, he cooled down though when it was pointed out it was in fact coach Jeremy Lloyd. Ellis kicked the resulting penalty to level the score up at half time. Blackwood had grown in confidence by now and they quickly took the lead. Kristan Perry led a kick and chase but it was lock Mark Williams who won the race for the try, brother Owen would have been proud of the speed. Ellis converted and he did the same when John scored his second try after good work by Nathan Gittings. Vice captain Perry then got the all important fourth try and the game was over. Fair play to Treorchy they kept going and they finished the game with a consolation try. It was not enough to predjudice the result though and Blackwood went back to the very welcoming clubhouse to celebrate the win. Both sides gained from this game and I can see Treorchy winning a lot more games than they lose. Tony Evans |
