Title: Blackwood crowned Division One East Champs after Bargoed clash !
Write Up: Well, this was it, the day we could finally close off any chance of being beaten in the league.

The Bargoed side arrived at Glan-Yr-Afon with the intention of upsetting our day but they went about things all wrong. As we know Bargoed are no push-over and can be a handful for any side. They have quality players throughout the squad and are an exciting side to watch, but there were a few who did not want to play rugby. Instead some dirty play and indicipline was to be their downfall in this match.

Bargoed started off well and got the first score which silenced the home crowd. A set move in mid-field and a couple of missed tackles saw the visitors cross for a converted try.

Only minutes later, Gareth Price got Blackwoods first points of the day. A penalty kick in front of the posts saw the score closed to 3-7 after the Bargoed backline drifted offside.

Another try from Bargoed saw them extend their lead after a breakaway try. The ball was kicked downfield and the race on to get back. The try was converted and Blackwood had to regain some composure as they were behind 14-3.

An unlucky forward pass almost saw Kristan Perry get the score but procedings were called back for a Bargoed five metre scrum. From the very start, the mighty Blackwood pack were dominant in the set pieces and shoved the visitors off the ball in the scrums. This caused several balls to be turned over and give Blackwood the platform and the edge over their opponents. Number 8 David Brake got on the scoresheet from the five metre scrum and crashed over for Blackwoods first try of the day. Price converted and the score 10-14 looked much healthier.

Minutes later from the restart, a knock on from Bargoed gave Blackwood the scrum. Brake picked up at the base and the move carried on through Dean Gibbs. The ball found its way to Perry on the wing who stepped into space and Gareth Rusby-Davies crossed for the try. Price sailed the conversion wide but Blackwood had the lead 15-14 at the interval.

From the resart, things kicked off when Rusby-Davies charged in protecting Marc Gwilt against some over zealous stamping from the Bargoed number 5. With tensions still high Rusby-Davies was given a yellow for a late tackle but the resulting head-butt saw the Bargoed scrum half being given the red card. After some choice words to referee Alan Jenkins he was ordered to leave the playing enclosure.

With tempers fray, the Bargoed indiscipline started to control their game and they lost composure. After one such incident, a Gareth Price penalty bisected the uprights to extend the home sides lead to 18-14.

Not happy with the way play was going there were plenty of cheap shots going in. Blackwood Hooker Leigh Murray and the Bargoed number 4 were sent to the bin and in the next passage of play the Bargoed number 5 also took a break from play. Referee Alan Jenkins really had his hands full and deserves full credit for controlling a game which could have erupted at any time.

To calm things down from a Blackwood perspective, Rusby-Davies got his second try of the afternoon after a lovely break from replacement scrum half Gavin Rees. Price added the conversion and Blackwood were now two scores clear at 25-14.

A handling error let Bargoed in for another try but the victory was sealed by Blackwoods Club Captain Gavin Rees. A five metre scrum gave Blackwood the solid platform and Brake picked up at the base. The pass to Rees gave him some space to cross for the score. Price converted and the final score was Blackwood 32 - Bargoed 21.

The euphoric Blackwood side were league champions and the trophy awarded much to the delight of the home support.

Another outstanding victory for the best side in division one east !
